Proposal to Sequence the Genome of Daphnia Pulex

چکیده
Recent characterization of the complete genomic sequences of multiple eukaryotes and prokaryotes is rapidly increasing our ability to understand how genome structure evolves and how gene expression and individual performance is modified in response to environmental challenges. These advances hold the promise of making a direct connection between the genome and the phenotype of organisms in populations and communities, both in natural environments and in settings modified by human disturbance. However, to bridge the span between genes and ecosystems and to link molecular and cellular functions to population-level responses in nature, genomic tools must be developed for model organisms with tractable and well-characterized ecologies. One such system is the planktonic microcrustacean Daphnia, which plays a central role in the ecology of almost all standing freshwater on earth.

The water flea Daphnia - a 'new' model system for ecology and evolution?
Daphnia pulex is the first crustacean to have its genome sequenced. Availability of the genome sequence will have implications for research in aquatic ecology and evolution in particular, as addressed by a series of papers published recently in BMC Evolutionary Biology and BMC Genomics.
متن کاملIn Silico Prediction and In Vivo Validation of Daphnia pulex Micrornas
Daphnia pulex, the crustacean with the first sequenced genome, is an important organism that has been widely used in ecological and toxicological research. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are 21-25 nucleotide small non-coding RNAs that are involved in a myriad of physiological processes. In this research, we predicted 75 D. pulex miRNAs by sequence homology and secondary structure identification from the fu...
متن کاملPatterns of intraspecific DNA variation in the Daphnia nuclear genome.
Understanding nucleotide variation in natural populations has been a subject of great interest for decades. However, many taxonomic groups, especially those with atypical life history attributes remain unstudied, and Drosophila is the only arthropod genus for which DNA polymorphism data are presently abundant. As a result of the recent release of the complete genome sequence and a wide variety ...
متن کاملThe complete mitochondrial genome of the Chinese Daphnia pulex (Cladocera, Daphniidae)
Daphnia pulex has played an important role in fresh-water ecosystems. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Daphnia pulex from Chaohu, China was sequenced for the first time. It was accomplished using long-PCR methods and a primer-walking sequencing strategy with genus-specific primers. The mitogenome was found to be 15,306 bp in length. It contained 13 protein-coding genes, two r...
متن کاملTranscontinental Phylogeography of the Daphnia pulex Species Complex
Daphnia pulex is quickly becoming an attractive model species in the field of ecological genomics due to the recent release of its complete genome sequence, a wide variety of new genomic resources, and a rich history of ecological data. Sequences of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 genes were used to assess the global phylogeography of this speci...
